The problem is I had six missed calls while the device and my phone was paired.

Go into the bluetooth settings for the paired device and click it and some options should appear that confirm what audio elements are going to be sent to the bluetooth device. Make sure everything here is checked.
Also press the volume button on your phone and then you should be able to expand this and see more volume controls for other types of audio. Make sure that none of them are muted or at the very low end of the bar.
