I can connect them to my Chromebook and they chime when connected so they can play audio but they don't play audio from the Chromebook.

If you click on the bottom right corner volume/time element of the screen the popup menu will include slider bars for volume control. Assuming the Chromebook has more than one valid output device it can play the audio to it should be possible to click to the right of the slider for the speaker volume which will take you into a window that lets you select the default playback/output device.
